5 Reasons You Should Be Proud To Be A Female Entrepreneur In Kenya

Female entrepreneurs in Kenya face a lot of challenges while doing business and a very high percentage of them end up giving up on doing business. Many succumb to family or social pressures and choose to get married (if they are youth and/or single) for financial security; and for duty (they are told that is what is expected of them). Some just decide to believe that business is a man’s activity and it is too difficult for them. There are even Kenyan women who tell other women doing business, especially when going through tough times, that they should give up on business and find other alternatives. However; there are the select strong, focused and motivated women who continue to be entrepreneurs and persevere in their journey. Having faced (and still facing) many challenges in my continuing journey of entrepreneurship in Kenya; I understand how tough it can be. It’s not very easy to find other women who will applaud and motivate you in your choice to do business. That is why it’s important to be self-driven and motivated. Today however, I’ll be that person ^_^, I want to give you five reasons why I am proud (and therefore you should be too) that you are a female entrepreneur in Kenya. I’ll tell you why you’re so awesome and should keep going because you will only get awesomer (yup – it’s the kind of day where I’m just making up words ^_^)

* It means you are courageous and have a strong character

For anyone to choose to be an entrepreneur (and stay at it), they have to have a strong character. A person who is self-driven, self motivated and is not discouraged easily. This means that you are a woman of great strength, faith and dedication. You are not afraid to take risks to better your life and the lives of those around you. You may be afraid of uncertainties that lie ahead, but you realize that fear should not drive your decisions. You conquer that fear and do what you have to do because you realize it is necessary to achieve success. That makes you such as super woman – you go girl!

* You are a great example for youth out there to look up to, especially girls

Female youth in Kenya need positive women leaders to look up to. The leaders don’t have to be political, work in NGOs or be famous. It can be just a female entrepreneur who works hard not only to be successful in business but to influence the lives around her in a positive way. That just describes you – you can inspire people just by what you do everyday in your life. You can inspire youth because you work hard, you don’t give up, when things are tough or when you fail, you find the strength to keep moving and stay positive. Youth need to see regular women in their area doing just that and they themselves will ask or tell themselves – ‘Even we can do that”, “Why can’t we do the same, we’re no different than her?” So keep up the good work, keep going, stay strong and positive. You don’t know who you are inspiring out there. Somewhere near you, there is a young girl who wants to be just like you – because to her you are super woman ^_^

* This is an opportune time to be an entrepreneur in Kenya

The Kenyan economy is growing and doing very well; it is one of the top five thriving economies in Africa. I believe that it will only get better. So if you are a startup entrepreneur in Kenya, if you continue working hard and working smart; you will be successful in time. As a female entrepreneur, you should be proud to be working in such a growing economy and aspire to better than the day before; for you will achieve success as well. You will also be a pioneer in an economy that is very male-dominated in business. You will be in the group of women that continue to grow and inspire many in business. Now isn’t that a great legacy to leave? You should definitely be proud of yourself lady ^_^!

* You’re creating employment for youth and other women in Kenya

Female entrepreneurs are also necessary in the Kenyan economy because they create employment in their areas. This is good especially for youth and other unemployed women who turn to crime and other negative activities to make money such as prostitution. Therefore by starting and running a successful business, you are improving people’s lives and helping them in their journey to success in their lives as well. That is a truly noble and inspiring thing; you should give yourself a pat in the back – you’re just amazing I tell you – AMAZING!

*You are on your way to financial freedom

Many women wish to be financially independent; but it is not an easy task anywhere in the world, especially in Kenya. Most female entrepreneurs decide to work hard to be successful in order to achieve financial freedom. There are many reasons why it is important and different women have good reasons to be worried about financial freedom. A large percentage of women choose to get married to achieve financial security through spouses they identify to be financial secure. This leads to unhappy marriages and possibly infidelity on both sides. Another reason can be that women can get married believing they have found a perfect and loving spouse for themselves. However; they find that they are unsatisfied and unhappy in their marriages, but cannot leave because they are financially dependent on their husbands. I will be honest a scenario that is rather personal to me is when one spouse dies in the marriage (such as the husband) and the widow is left to take care of her family. My dad died while my siblings and I were still young; fortunately my mum had a secure job but the quality of life still changed considerably. The financial burden can be quite a strain on the widow left behind if they are only relying on a monthly salary. I’m sure many female entrepreneurs have their reasons why they pursue their business goals in order to achieve financial freedom. I am here to tell you to persevere in your journey, be smart and you will be successful. You will definitely achieve financial freedom my fellow entrepreneuress! So to all of you female entrepreneurs in Kenya, be proud of what you are doing. You are amazing individuals who have the strength of a lion; the roar of a tiger and you will conquer all your challenges and come out as Queens of your world! Work hard, work smart and stay motivated; when you fall – get back up and keep moving. Stay awesome and be the best of yourself that you can possibly ever be. I am proud of you and proud to be one of you as well ^_^.

10 Songs Female Entrepreneurs In Kenya Should Have In Their Playlist

As a female entrepreneur in Kenya, it’s imperative to stay inspired and motivated. Ladies face many challenges in the Kenyan business world and they should make sure this doesn’t bring them down. It shouldn’t deter you to stop moving and keep working hard. There are numerous ways of stepping back, taking a breather and getting your inspiration. You can work-out, relax with a loved one, get inspiration from other successful female entrepreneurs, work on a recipe if cooking is your thing (or baking like me ^_^), there are many things. One way I found that helps me out if I don’t choose any of the above, is music. I have a playlist of music that inspires me; and it consists mostly of songs from successful women (surprised you are – I know). I will share some of the songs that really motivate me and I know will definitely do so to most female entrepreneurs in Kenya out there.

1. “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child

This is an anthem for most people who were, and still are, Destiny’s Child fans. I love this song because it speaks to anyone who has struggled, and may still be struggling in different ways in life. It’s a mantra that one can repeat to stay strong knowing that you will make it through whatever challenge you are going through. It’s great for tough times and even those of failure. It helps you realize that you can survive through a lot.

Destiny's Child - Survivor

Destiny’s Child – Survivor

I’m a survivor, I’m not gon’ give up, I’m not gon’ stop, I’m gon’ work harder

I’m a survivor, I’m gonna make it, I will survive and keep on surviving.

2. “This Girl Is On Fire” by Alicia Keys

This is a great song from a favorite artist of mine, Alicia Keys. Women tend to sometimes criticize themselves and they don’t appreciate their achievements as often as they should. I like this song because it talks to women to appreciate their passion and drive, regardless of their challenges. Of course ladies, who doesn’t like to hear that ‘she’s on fire’? I know I do ^_^.

She got both feet on the ground
And she’s burning it down
She got her head in the clouds
And she’s not backing down

3. “Roar” by Katy Perry

I love this song because it has a certain honesty to it that many ladies can relate to. It describes a person who was passive and didn’t believe in anything and let things happen to her. She then realizes how her life is and decides to break free and change it. There are things that we should change or want to change in our lives that we never take steps to work towards them. We are passive about them and make excuses. This song inspires women to break free and change them; to become champions, to ‘roar’ and become their own heroes! That is definitely inspirational ladies, I bet you agree.roar - katy perry

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
You’re gonna hear me roar

4. “The Fighter” by Gym Class Heroes feat. Ryan Tedder

This song is not by ladies, but I love it. It’s a great description of how one should never give up no matter how bad it looks. It’s a song about someone starting from the bottom without prospects and going through a lot. The song uses a fighter as a metaphor describing the person going through the challenge. The fighter doesn’t give up, no matter how hard the fight is. Until when he/she passes, people recognize that he/she is a fighter. You want to be the person who goes through challenges and never gives up. Until when you meet people, they recognize the fighting spirit in you. It’s a very inspirational song that speaks to entrepreneurs going through very tough times and are still fighting to keep going.

fighter lyrics

Until the referee rings the bell
Until both your eyes start to swell
Until the crowd goes home
What we gonna do ya’ll?
Give em hell, turn their heads
Gonna live life ’til we’re dead.
Give me scars, give me pain
Then they’ll say to me, say to me, say to me
There goes the fighter, there goes the fighter
Here comes the fighter
That’s what they’ll say to me, say to me, say to me,
This one’s a fighter

5. “Superwoman” – Alicia Keys

I’m sure by now you have all noticed that I’m an Alicia Keys fan ^_^. This song describe the way one might feel sometimes. You may feel down, un-motivated and worried about a lot of challenges you’re facing as a female entrepreneur. However; you have to wake up, dress up, get out there and keep working – no matter how you feel. I’m sure a lot of us ladies do so and I do believe that makes us super women in our own ways. It’s definitely hard to keep going when times are tough and all is not well, but we look for the strength and we keep going. I like listening to this song because I feel like super woman when I do ^_^. Alicia Keys - Superwoman

Cause I am a Superwoman
Yes I am
Yes she is
Even when I’m a mess
I still put on a vest
With an S on my chest
Oh yes
I’m a Superwoman

6. “I Was Here” by Beyonce

I would like to also state that I am a Beyonce fan and have been since her Destiny’s Child days. A lot of her songs resonate with me especially the inspirational songs. This is one of them. Many female entrepreneurs decide to take that particular path not only to change and better their lives, but also to change and influence other people’s lives as well. We each want to leave a mark in our world so people remember we were here and we made a difference. This song voices that wish in us and it’s a very powerful and inspiring song. When I listen to it, it rekindles the fire that I have to make a difference in my piece of the world and I continue to work hard to achieve my goals.

I was here
I lived, I loved
I was here
I did, I’ve done everything that I wanted
And it was more than I thought it would be
I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I was here

7. “Live Your Life” by T.I. and Rihanna

As you live your life and continue working as an entrepreneur, you will at times encounter ‘haters’ and people who discourage you and criticize everything that you do. As much as you know you should ignore them, we are human and it hurts when people are negative towards us and say hurtful or hateful things. However; the only answer to such an issue is always to ignore them and to keep working. Being successful and achieving your goals is the best revenge you can get and this song speaks to that. This song tells you just to live your life and not worry about the haters out there; just to make your money. I think that is absolutely great advice from T.I. and Rihanna.TI and Rihanna

So live your life, hey
You steady chasin’ that paper
Just live your life, oh
Ain’t got no time for no haters

8. “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera

This is another favorite female singer of mine; she has an amazing voice and a lot of songs that I like. I particularly like this song because it also describes a challenging time of a person’s life. This song talks about when a person trusts another person and they let him/her down. This situation should not put you down or discourage you; it should make you stronger, a fighter. I also like that in the song, she says that she doesn’t hate the person who slighted her, and she wants to thank him/her. This song is a lesson, not to be filled with hate and revenge when a person hurts you. Work it out within yourself and if you can, forgive the person. Then learn from your mistakes; get smarter, stronger and more successful. This song is very inspiring to most ladies since we have all been through similar situations.

Makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter

9. “I’m Gonna Be Ok” – Kalekye Mumo

This is currently one of my favorite songs by a female Kenyan artist. It’s a lovely song that describes a woman who has realized that no matter what has happened to her in her life, she will be alright. This is a great song for ladies who sometimes go through many challenges and they’re not sure they will come out successful in the end, especially in business. We as female entrepreneurs need to know that we will make it.

10. “Say Yes” by Michelle Williams, Beyonce & Kelly Rowland

I love this song for various reasons; some obvious – I’m a Destiny’s Child fan (reunion anyone?) and Beyonce fan (yup – I’m proud to say it!). I’m also a strong believer in faith and I am a Christian – Catholic to be precise. I thank God everyday for the strength he gives me to keep going and I believe strongly in his guidance. This song is upbeat and also great for anybody who has great faith in God and believes in his guidance. These three women are a great example of what faith can do in one’s life and the success you can achieve when you work hard and trust in God.

"Say Yes"

“Say Yes”

I’m not worried ’bout a thing
Cause I know You are guiding me
Where you lead me, lord, I will go
I have no fear cause I know who’s in control
